I am at heart a common canal rat, even if I might have chewed out that particular vital organ and sold it. Have you had it happen to where the crowd entirely misread what you intended with a song? I suppose not so much now since you can control the reaction.

Common canal rats are turning into some of my favorites, lately. And yes, especially when I was starting out. Still happens sometimes, because no matter what you sing someone out there is gonna see it through a whole different perspective. That's something even I can't control. Though I'm glad it's never been as bad as people thinking Bruce Springsteen is anti-union.

Not saying you're an open book or anything, but I do like how quick I've been able to figure some of you out. Not all, obviously, but there's time.

That's because you're quick on the uptake and don't subscribe to blind patriotism. It's nice. The wildest was probably when I had somebody think a song I'd written about Sam after he'd left, before he died, was a love song. Ended up scrapping it entirely after that, the vibes were ruined.

More like an accidental stale nightmare. Had to tell Ma to stop at one point and just send him candy instead.

It sounds like she wanted to give him a piece of home, however impractical. The candy would more easily be put to use, though. What kind did he like?

Ended up being a whole hunk of home, but yeah. She did as best she could with what she had, but she was never a baker and neither was his girlfriend at the time, so I don't think they'd have been strictly edible even if they were just sending them down the block. And he liked Razzles, because they were two things at the same time.

I do try and take good care of my teeth these days, because I think I’d rather yank out my own tooth than visit a proper dentist or healer.

It doesn’t sound like you got a spontaneous baking gene, either. I had to look up Razzles. Looks pretty good. Two for one with it turning into gum, I can't fault his logic. It's economic.

No, no baking genes for me. Much to the dismay of my high school home economics class. But you're right, Razzles were always smart choice to make your candy last. But we sent him chocolate, too, to supplement his terrible-tasting ration chocolate.

Never had it used on me, but laughing seems more suited for you, anyway. I’ve gotten drugged before, but not in a doctor’s office or with a friend.

Did they give him the equivalent of cheap holiday chocolate?

It’s okay. The classic ‘get drugged and wake up tied to a chair’ routine, can one really even be a proper Barrel businessman without at least one of those to their tales. I didn’t get sent on any terrible trips or anything.

That does sound unfortunate. I hope he used the good candy he got sent wisely. He could probably gain some favors trading some of it away.

And to think, when I was young I thought business was boring and full of cubicles. I'm glad it wasn't too terrible. Bad trips are no joke, and you know how fond I am of jokes.

He did. He also traded some essays I sent him. Proud to say we both sowed the seeds of insubordination among the ranks.

Right? Way way back, I worked as a secretary for somebody. Barely lasted a week.

So many good words, Kaz. Whole epics of good words. But he was a nice kid who liked a lot of people, especially when they could surprise him.
