Right? I hadn't considered much before I met him. Though it's not like they made it just for adult entertainment, they played shows and everything, too.

Diversification, smart. Even the artists that play at the club don't just perform there. I wouldn't want to lock them into that contract, anyway. If they perform in other areas or ways and become a bigger name, and you treated them well, then more often than not they'll want to continue to support you too and you both win.
