Don’t underestimate any rodent is what I’d say. There's bound to be some with a disjointed sleep cycle and penchant for distraction.

Took us a minute... I think I was 8? Summer of '51 or '52. Dad found us a book of 'em. It was terrible.

8’s not that bad. I’ve seen some of those pun books, though. It’s definitely starting off at the bottom.

I thought about a pun, but couldn’t be too predictable.

It was definitely a minor competition with us, figuring out better puns than the ones in the book. Kinda think that'd been Dad's plan the whole time, for his own personal amusement.

You say that like predictability would tamper how much I like hearing you do puns.

No. He'd got called up, right after I was born, but having factory work kept him home.

It was. For other people, too. Growing up he had a lot of friends, guess they hadn't gotten out of service like he had. They came back worse for wear, and he'd go out and find 'em union work either in the mills with him or down in Bangor.

I do, though I don't bring it out much. Don't want it falling apart on me, so I carry around a newer edition I bought a few years ago.

I don’t fault you for wanting to preserve it. I’d be curious if the later translations changed anything.

There's a few lyric changes that I noticed. Mostly it's just additions, songs and verses both. I'll have to show you sometime.

I’d like to see it, yeah. I enjoy seeing what changes over different editions of things. I’ve actually never seen any of it, so it’ll be a first either way. I think the closest I've ever come to reading a song book was an old Kerch nursery rhyme book.

I'll bring them both by the Slat next time I have a chance. There's notes in the margins, but you can ignore those, it's just my noodling about guitar chords or my own word changes.

I don’t have any books left from back then, no. I have them all memorized, so there is that. Not the same, but it's something.

You're very welcome to it. Some just might not make much sense, or be entirely legible.

Sometimes the book itself doesn't matter so much. Would you tell some to me, sometime, though? I'd like to hear them. Won't put you on a stage for it or anything.

As long as a stage isn’t involved, sure. The morals found in them are different than in some others I’ve come across from other places. Hoarding profit isn’t really looked down upon here. There’s more tales of the peasant making his own fortune than realizing his true treasure was his morals all along.

The notes about guitar tabs might be a little more esoteric for you than strict shorthand. Otherwise it's chicken scratch.

No stages no lights, I promise. And they certainly sound very different. I figured that might be the case, but it'll be something else hearing it all folk-tale-like instead of thinking of it in theory.

Were you ever told that you should be a doctor because of your chicken scratch writing?

Phrasing does make a difference. And not all the messages are terrible. I actually agree with the ones that are against monarchies and the privilege of ruling being passed down. It's just hypocritical in practice, given how the Council operates. It's really not a merit-based oligarchy.
